Write down the task before choosing a tool

What do you need at the end: a website you can open, a calculator that works, or a comparison table with sources? List the input material, the output format and a cost you can accept. Try the same task in different tools so you can compare what matters to you.

The capability descriptions below are based on official material checked on 29 October 2026. Features and account requirements change; read the current instructions before installing or buying anything.

Building a website or changing a project

Check whether the tool can read and edit project files, show what changed, run the program and keep a version you can restore. Ask it to create a small page, change one sentence and open it again. See whether you understand the steps.

The official Claude Code overview describes it as a coding tool with access to project files, commands and development tasks. Choose an interface that suits your device, experience and the available version. First learn where your project lives, how to start it and how to recover an earlier version.

Organising material, writing reports or creating files

Use a sample you can check yourself. Does the result retain its sources, flag missing information and open correctly after export?

Claude's file feature documentation describes creating and editing documents, spreadsheets and other files. Its Cowork product guide describes working with authorised files and knowledge tasks that take several steps. Use the features available to your account as the product changes.

The official Tencent WorkBuddy introduction covers files, documents, spreadsheets and task execution. Check the capabilities, material handling and permissions of the version you use, then try it with practice material. A feature in a vendor's description still needs checking against your own task.

If you want a more configurable environment

DeepSeek Harness provides a configurable agent environment, including Skills and tool connections. It is a developer preview; its official safety notes also state that it has not had a security audit. Consider it if you are willing to work through configuration and troubleshooting. Practise with copies and access limited to the directories you need.

Check these before relying on a tool

What to confirm A practical check
It works in your setup Sign in and complete one task on your device and network
It can handle your material Test the format, size and reading result with a sample file
You can keep the result Open the exported file or run the generated project again
You can undo a change Save a version, make a change and practise restoring it
The cost is acceptable Check official subscriptions, usage charges and extra services against your actual task

For a website, try the first quote calculator. For work with material, use the three fictional quotes. Complete one task before deciding what else to add.

Questions

Where should a beginner start?
Start with the task. A website needs a tool that can work with project files, show changes and run the result. To practise comparing material, you can start with a chat tool that accepts the source text and creates a table. Check your device, account and costs too.
Can a chat tool only produce code snippets?
Capabilities vary by product and account. Some also create files or carry out tasks with several steps. Check the current official documentation and your account rather than judging only by the chat interface.
Do I need Skills and MCP before starting?
For a simple task, start with the material and instructions. A Skill can package a method you use repeatedly; MCP can connect tools to outside sources or services. Add them when the task needs them, with the appropriate permissions.
